The Topps Chewing Gum Company of Brooklyn, New York issued its first national baseball card sets in 1951. Issued in two series, the cards are known as the Red Backs and Blue Backs, as that is the major difference in design between the two series. The 1951 Topps Cards sold two cards to a package for a penny. The 1951 Topps Cards are designed as a deck of cards for an elementary baseball game. Although collector interest in these sets has been fairly weak, these cards can usually be found at a fair buying price when compared to other sets of the era. Since a warehouse of unopened boxes of 1951 Topps Red Back cards was discovered in the mid-80s, the 1951 Topps Blue Backs are more scarce and valuable. Even though the 1951 Topps Baseball Card Set is fairly basic, it is an important set because Topps was now in the baseball card business. The baseball card collecting hobby was launched. Things would never again be the same.
