At 407 cards, the 1952 Topps Baseball Card Set was the largest set of its day, both in the total number of cards and their physical size.  The 1952 Topps Baseball set the standard for modern sets and launched Topps into the number one position to stay.

The key to the 1952 Topps Baseball Set is card #311 of Mickey Mantle. Perhaps the most sought-after card of the post-World War II era, it is part of the scarce high series. Other notable cards in the 1952 Topps Baseball High Series include #312 Jackie Robinson, #314 Roy Campanella, and the rookie cards of Hall of Famers #407 Eddie Mathews (the last card in the set) and #392 Hoyt Wilhelm. 

This series was produced so late and had so little interest that many unsold cards remained.  To get rid of them – as the story goes – several Topps employees took cases and cases of 1952 Topps Baseball Card High Numbers out in a boat and dumped them into New York Harbor.  I am not sure I believe it, but it is a great story!
