1940 Play Ball (R335) Baseball Cards
The 1940 Play Ball Baseball Card Set contains 240 cards measuring 2 1/2" x 3 1/8". The 1940 Play Ball Cards feature black and white photos of the players on the front. This is surrounded by a frame that contains a glove, bat, and ball along the bottom portion of the card that surrounds the player name.
The backs of the cards are in black text on a tan card stock. There are extensive bios of the player featured. In 1940, Play Ball also decided to feature players from the past. Probably the most notable of this is the exceedingly hard to find #225 Shoeless Joe Jackson card. Cards included in the 181-240 range also hold a premium, since they are harder to obtain.
Some Key Hall-of-Famers or notable players featured in this issue include the: 1940 Play Ball #1 Joe DiMaggio, #7 Bill Dickey, #27 Ted Williams, #40 Hank Greenberg, #41 Charlie Gehringer, #87 Carl Hubbell, #88 Mel Ott, #120 Walter Johnson, #133 Jimmie Foxx, #168 Honus Wagner, #175 Christy Mathewson, #225 Shoeless Joe Jackson and #237 Willie Keeler.
