Pre-War Baseball Card Guide
| All cards printed prior to 1900 are known as N-cards. Although
most of the cards were inserted with cigarettes or loose tobacco,
many N-cards were not tobacco cards. The very first baseball card,
the 1868-70 Peck & Snyder trading card, was issued by a
sporting goods store in New York City and is considered an N-card.
Woodcuts, cabinets, and currency are also all considered N-cards.
Tobacco, however, did popularize baseball cards. The American
Tobacco Company provided some of the best publicity that the sport
of baseball could ever hope for by inserting baseball cards into
their numerous brands of tobacco. |
