The 1959 Fleer Ted Williams Baseball set pays homage to one of the greatest baseball players of all time, "The Splendid Splinter." This set consists of 80 cards total, measuring the standard 2 1/2" by 3 1/2".
It was rare for an entire set to be devoted to a single player. The Frank H. Fleer Company had been making gum since the 1920s, but had only occasionally released trading cards through the 1950s. The company decided to fully enter the trading card ring with an aggressive pitch to one of the most popular players of the era, eventually succeeding in negotiating an exclusive contract with Ted Williams himself.
The 1959 Fleer Ted Williams Baseball cards are similar in their design to that of other Fleer sets released in the company's early years. Most cards are laid out with a vertical orientation and primarily feature a portrait, white border, and Williams' name in the lower right corner. The backs of the cards are dominated by write-ups explaining the picture shown on the front. Fleer's signature crown in the top left corner contain the card number, with the words "Baseball's Greatest Ted Williams" beside it.
This 25 card starter set consists of 25 cards and does not contain any duplicate cards.
