This 1962 Mars Attacks Complete Set contains 54 of the 55 cards.  Card #55 is a very expensive checklist card that has been removed in order to keep the cost of the set down.  The Mars Attack set tells the story, card by card, of the evil creatures from Mars attacking Earth, and inflicting terrible and gory acts to its people and even their dogs. The Mars Attacks shows these acts of terror in colorful and graphic detail.  Not to worry though, Earth counter-attacks and the story ends with card #54, when Mars Explodes.

The 1962 Mars Attacks set was produced by Topps, under the name Bubbles, Inc.  It was a follow-up to the equally gory, Civil War News card set, produced earlier that year.  The 1962 Mars Attacks card set was also marketed to kids, but this time the parents took notice of the gore and complained.
Topps responded by attempting to redesign the most offensive of the cards, but after a complaint from a Connecticut District attorney, decided not to risk damage to their baseball card empire over a niche set, and discontinued the 1962 Mars Attack cards.  This action only increased the popularity of the set, at the time, and over the years, the popularity of the Mars Attacks cards have continued to increase.  As these cards were printed in limited numbers, 1962 Topps Complete Sets have become very difficult to find.
