Johnny Vergez

Jean Louis Vergez was a Major League Baseball third baseman. He was born on July 9, 1906 in Oakland, California and he went to Alameda High School in Alameda, California. His debut was on April 14, 1931 for the New York Giants. He played all or part of six seasons in the majors, from 1931 until 1936, for the New York Giants, Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals. On November 1, 1934 he was traded by the New York Giants along with Pretzel Pezzullo, Blondy Ryan and George Watkins to the Philadelphia Phillies for Dick Bartell. On May 24, 1936, he was sold by the Philadelphia Phillies to the St. Louis Cardinals. His final major league game was on June 13, 1936. Following his major league career, he continued to play in the Pacific Coast League until 1943.

Vergez was the starting third baseman for the Giants in 1933, when they won the World Series. However, a late-season bout of appendicitis kept him from playing in the series, where he was replaced by Travis Jackson.
