The attractiveness, affordability and availability of the 1954 Bowman 224-card set makes it very popular among collectors. This Almost Complete Set contains the majority of those cards.
The front of the card features a bright and colorful player picture, with their name in a rectangle along the bottom with a solid background. The back of the 1954 Bowman cards feature a red and black color scheme. Across the top is a ball and bat graphic that contains the player's name and card number. Below this are player facts and career stats.
Jimmy Piersall appears on both cards #66 and #210. There is also a 1954 Bowman card #66 featuring Ted Williams. The 1954 Williams cards are extremely rare. Ted Williams had been flying jets in Korea. Upon his return, Bowman was informed that Williams had signed an exclusive contract with Topps and did not have the rights to put him on a card. Bowman quickly replaced card #66 with Jimmy Piersall. For this reason, the #66 Williams card is not considered part of the 1954 Bowman complete set.
Another interesting feature of the 1954 Bowman baseball card set is that every 16 cards feature a player from a different team. For example, cards #1,17,33,49... of players from the Yankees, and cards #2,18,34,50... are of Red Sox players.
Bowman's 1954 set featured several players who were not found in the 1954 Topps Baseball Card Set, including: Robin Roberts, Roy Campanella, Bob Feller and Pee Wee Reese.
Some of the other Hall-of-Famers in the 1954 Bowman Set are: Rizzuto, Fox, Ashburn, Kiner, Kell, Wilhelm, Reese, Slaughter, Mathews, Doby, Mays, Campanella, Roberts, Larsen, Schoendienst, Feller, Hodges, Martin, Berra, Wynn, Snider, Ford, Lemon, and Mantle.
