1964 Donruss Combat
Topps was not the only trading card company to produce non-sports cards during the 1960’s, and in 1963 Donruss came out with their first series of Combat! trading cards. The 66 card set was based off the hit TV program, and individual cards depicted characters and scenes from the show. Although the captions and writing on the back of the cards have little to do with the picture on the obverse, if the cards are read in order, they tell a complete story. One problem the Donruss Company faced in production of these cards however, was the fact that they only had a license to use images of the regular cast members. Thus if an “extra” was in the photo, the face of the extra must be taken off and drawn on by hand. Therefore, many of the cards have a cartoonish look to them. The 1963 first series set was so popular that Donruss issued another 66 cards in 1964.
