1939 Play Ball Samples

Flush with success from the recent Horrors of War set of gum cards, Warren Bowman decided that the time to issue set of baseball cards in 1939.  As a new product, the first 115 cards of the 1939 Play Ball set were produced with a red overprint on the back stating "FREE SAMPLE CARD".  A handful of cards was then distributed to stores, in order to promote the new product.  The 1939 Play Ball samples were produced in much smaller numbers than the regular cards in the set, and offer a fun challenge for today's collectors.
