1961 Nu-Card Football Cards

1961 Nu-Card Football Cards
The 1961 Nu-Card Football Card Set was Nu-Card's initial set into the Football card market.  Competitors Topps and Fleer were already producing pro football sets, so Nu-Card decided to issue an 80 card set consisting entirely of college players.  The cards are numbered #101-180 and represent approximately 50 different colleges.

Several of the 1961 Nu-Card Football Card Set's players went on to play professional football and many were enshrined into the College Hall-of-Fame.  The most popular card in the set is #143 1961 Heisman trophy winner, Ernie Davis.  Davis was the first African-American to win the award and was the top pick of the 1962 NFL draft, but was never able to play because of illness.
