The 1956 Topps Pins set feature head shots of players set against a colorful background. Marketed as "Baseball Buttons", there are a total of 60 unnumbered pins that measure only 1 1/18" in diameter. Each pin came in a small box, with a piece of bubble gum. Most of player images were borrowed from the cards, and were printed directly on the pins, making the pins easy to scratch and very condition sensitive. Sales of this unusual item were limited, so the pins produced in small numbers, making them scarce and expensive today. There are also 3 short-prints, Chuck Diering, Hector Lopez and Chuck Stobbs, who have even smaller populations.
The players selected to appear in the 1956 Topps Baseball Pins Set seems a bit odd, as there are only a dozen Hall of Fame players, such as Willie Mays, Ted Williams, Duke Snider, Yogi Berra and Hank Aaron. What is unusual is the large numbers of average players, for such a small set. Examples of lesser known players, who appeared on pins include Ron Negray, Carlos Paula and Bill Tremel.
